Product Details

What is IBM Cloud Block Storage?

Block storage, sometimes referred to as block-level storage, is a technology that is used to store data files on Storage Area Networks (SANs) or cloud-based storage environments. Block storage breaks up data into blocks and then stores those blocks as separate pieces, each with a unique identifier. The SAN places those blocks of data wherever it is most efficient. Block storage also decouples data from user environments, allowing that data to be spread across multiple environments. This creates multiple paths to the data and allows the user to retrieve it quickly.

IBM Cloud Block Storage is designed to help partners, enterprises, and organizations with their block storage needs, offering flash-backed, local disk performance with SAN persistence and durability, customizable IOPs, and predictable billing.

We use block storage throughout our infrastructure to reliably ensure data sharing between the various nodes of our cluster as well as the containers that run within it. That allows us to dynamically scale services that will share common data with the security that they will have of the data they need in real time. In our experience using the service, even with auto snapshots we have not had the need to make use of that since our downtime has been almost equal to 0% (moreover, I do not remember if there was ever a problem and for us that is critical)
  • Correct efficiency for the use of ISCSI
  • Perform hot backups efficiently
  • Manages a variable IOPS ratio for various needs
  • The documentation must be clearer and updated, thinking about each distribution that they offer in the cloud
  • Downtime when IOPS are raised can be less
  • The configuration can be more automated from the same control panel and not have to take it so much to the CLI
The service in general is great because on the backend. IBM offers experience and knowledge in the use of data center technologies undeniably. I recommend it for almost any situation but particularly for databases and especially large ones. That possibility of adjusting IOPS dynamically to levels that other data centers do not offer makes it unique. I don't recommend using the service if you don't have an infrastructure expert who knows about servers, Linux, and storage because a lot of the configuration and settings require an expert hand.
  • Variable IOPS
  • Security
  • Reliability
  • Strong Technology
  • Great Support
  • We just think in fill data, not in the storage engine, that is a big plus
  • No need to worry in additional configuration for new nodes
  • Just fits all the standards
The biggest difference that I have been able to find from other services external to IBM has been the domain, experience and application of the technology at the datacenter scale that allows [us] to be quite sure that the data will be in good collection. But I insist that the most important value I have been able to find is the variable and high IOPS setting, which virtually allows you to handle large volumes, that is, big data without major problems and we walk that way.

IBM Cloud Block Storage is being used by several applications across various departments within IT. We have a wide range of use cases requiring fast and efficient compute solutions and IBM Cloud Block Storage has delivered on our requirements.
  • Efficient solution for data transfers
  • Reasonably priced compute solution
  • Easy to provision and maintain
  • The default naming is not easy to remember
  • It would be nice to see which resource groups they are associated to
  • Dashboard has very minimal details
It is a reliable solution for applications involving large amounts of data transfers in a fast and efficient way. It is also reasonably priced in comparison to competitors in the market, making it a budget friendly, reliable pick among compute solutions.
  • Reliability. No data corruption.
  • Reliable service
  • Price
  • Easier and faster provisioning has increased speed to delivery
  • Reliable solution has helped with stability
  • Reasonably priced meeting budget
Being part of an organization that has a sizable footprint in IBM Cloud, the IBM Cloud Block Storage is a natural choice. Also, IBM Cloud Block Storage's native integration with Aspera is an added bonus for use cases needing fast, reliable data storage and transfer solutions.

It is used as a repository for our encrypted backup of all business critical information stored within IBM Cloud. It allows for easy growth and has a pricing scale to match our requirements. It was (and needed to be) easy to deploy and link to.
  • Great pricing structure that scales based on what you need to use it for
  • Very easy to deploy
  • Very easy to link into existing IBM set up
  • Good, easy to follow documentation
Perfect as a backup storage location, and might be used for archive file storage in the future.
  • Ease of use
  • Price
  • Availability
  • Reduced the cost of backup storage
  • Allowed us to create a DR plan that is better suited to our needs
N/A. IBM Cloud Block Storage was the best solution as we already use IBM Cloud for the information that would utilise it.
